Shane Byrne suffered a spectacular crash which halted race two of the British Superbike Championship at Knockhill on Sunday.
The Sittingbourne racer slid off and crashed into a tyre wall at high speed while leading the race.
Byrne went into the weekend as championship leader and despite the sour end to proceedings he still managed to stretch his lead over Cal Crutchlow to 110 points.
The race had already been red flagged on lap ten following a crash involving Kenny Gilbertson, David Johnson and Tom Grant. It was the same place that Byrne was to have his moment and end up in the gravel.
The Airwaves Ducati rider had already experienced a crash during the weekend after taking a tumble in qualifying.
Sunday’s second race win was awarded to Leon Haslam while Michael Rutter came second. Crutchlow, who had failed to finish race one, could only manage seventh in race two.
Byrne had earlier claimed valuable championship points with a second place finish in race one behind Tom Sykes.
Ashford’s Leon Camier finished in fifth place after race one and eighth in race two.
