Byrne forced to put celebrations on ice

Shane Byrne's title wait goes on
Shane Byrne's title wait goes on

Shane Byrne will need to wait a little longer to wrap up the British Superbike title after suffering frustration at Croft.

Byrne finished fifth and fourth to finish the weekend just six points short of clinching the championship.

The Kent rider got the weekend off to a painful start after a spectacular crash in practice left him with a damaged shoulder and a missing tooth.

Byrne needed to finish the weekend 100 points ahead of distant rivals Tom Sykes and Leon Haslam to clinch the title but he now heads into the final two rounds with a 94 point lead.

“I am gutted that I did not get on the podium in either race and I am disappointed not to have wrapped up the championship,” he said.

“It has been a frustrating weekend but I’ll now focus on Silverstone and hopefully take the championship for Airwaves Ducati there.”

It was Byrne’s Ducati team-mate Leon Camier who took the glory in race one.

Ashford’s Camier described his second win of the season as “absolutely awesome” as he took the chequered flag 2.5 seconds ahead of second place man Haslam.

Byrne meanwhile was pushed down to fifth after a lunge from Sykes on the last corner denied the Kent man a third place podium spot.

Maidstone’s Scott Smart brought his Kawasaki home in 13th.

Byrne had a poor start in race two and a coming together with Michael Rutter left him down in tenth.

A succession of fastest laps saw Byrne climb back up to fourth while Camier finished fifth.

“In race one I worked hard to get myself up to third, however, I was pushed very wide on the final corner and driven back to fifth.

“It was gutting but it got me really fired up for race two. That didn’t go to plan either and although I was lapping fast I couldn’t catch the front guys and had to settle for fourth.”

In the Supersport Championship Pembury’s James Webb finished fourth for the Padgetts Motorycle team.
