Sittingbourne manager Nick Davis puts things into perspective amid difficult run of form

Manager Nick Davis is looking at the bigger picture after the disappointment of Sittingbourne’s late league defeat.

The Brickies slipped to 14th in Isthmian South East, two points clear of the bottom four, after a fourth loss in five games on Saturday.

They led Beckenham 2-1 with goals from Matthew Warren and Youssef Bamba but conceded twice in the last 13 minutes, including an 88th-minute winner.

Defeat was tough to take but the Brickies, who were second after winning at Cray Valley a month ago, know they are good enough to climb the table.

They’re only five points outside the play-off places, so things can soon change.

“It’s so frustrating,” said Davis. “We’re losing by the odd goal. We’re not a million miles away.

“We’re a new side, and it takes time, but the balance to the side has been good the last couple of weeks. It’s been much better.

“It’s a tight league and there’s been some funny results. A couple of wins can take you up the league and a couple of defeats can put you down there.

“Maybe that’s how the league is going to be this season.

“We need to keep working hard and turn it around quickly.”

Sittingbourne were looking good for the points against Beckenham before unravelling at the end.

Game management was an issue for the Brickies, who visit Sevenoaks this Saturday (3pm).

“It’s a difficult one to take,” said Davis.

“They’ve scored direct from a corner that’s hit the post - I’m not sure if it’s crossed the line but it’s given - and then we’ve come into it.

“We’ve scored from a set-piece and got ourselves 2-1 up and with 13 minutes to go we should see the game out.

“When you’re leading like that, you’ve got to manage the game better. We’ve conceded two really bad goals.

“We had a good chance after we scored our second, which we didn’t take, and we’ve been punished.

“Fair play to Beckenham but it’s poor from us.

“I’m bitterly disappointed. We’ve got enough experience out there to manage the game better.

“I don’t think we’ve had the rub of the green this year but we need to be seeing games out.”

Sittingbourne, beaten 3-0 at Chatham in the Velocity Cup last night, visit National South Welling in the Kent Senior Cup Second Round on Tuesday (7.45pm).
