History-making Sittingbourne progressed to the FA Trophy third round for the first time ever on Saturday.
Ryan Maxwell’s promotion-chasing Isthmian South East team, at Southern League Premier Division South side Winchester City, trailed at half-time.
But they made it 1-1 as the prolific forward Mitchell May converted a penalty on 81 minutes before three players were red-carded - home defender Dan Bradshaw and captain Jamie Barron, with May himself dismissed for the Brickies.
Sittingbourne came out on top 5-4 in the shootout, though, in front of a crowd of 463 to pocket £3,750 in prize money. Creative midfielder Joe Boachie netted the winning penalty.
Isthmian Premier Chatham were beaten on penalties after a 1-1 draw at National League South Slough.
Midfielder Jordy Mongoy put Kevin Hake’s troops ahead in the first period and, although they lost forward Jamie Yila to a red card just before the hour, it was 10 men apiece on 78 minutes when ex-Herne Bay defender Lexus Beeden was given his marching orders.
But Slough found an injury-time equaliser before they won the shootout 4-2.
Two second-half strikes consigned Folkestone to a 2-0 defeat at home to Hanwell Town.
Maidstone limped out of the FA Trophy at lower-league Horsham.
They trailed to a Daniel Ajakaiye goal after two minutes and Reece Myles-Meekums doubled the Isthmian Premier side’s lead in the second half.
Defender Ben Brookes scored a late penalty for the visitors but it’s Horsham who progress, winning 2-1.
A late goal consigned Tonbridge to a 1-0 defeat at Gosport.
Fellow National League South side, Welling, are also out, as they went down 2-1 at home to Havant & Waterlooville.
Trailing 2-0, Alex Lankshear rose highest to nod in late to keep the tie alive, but the Wings’ fightback came too late.
Sittingbourne will be joined by National League Ebbsfleet in next week’s FA Trophy third-round draw.
