Sittingbourne are staying in Ryman League Division 1 South after Thurrock lost their appeal against a points deduction.
The Brickies were placed in Division 1 North when the league allocations for 2013/14 were released. That would have meant an extra 1,000 miles travelling to away games and the loss of lucrative local derbies.
But when Thurrock were deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player, the picture changed for Sittingbourne. The points deduction relegated Thurrock to the North division, reprieved Carshalton back into the Premier and opened up a space in the South.
On Tuesday, the Essex club failed in their appeal to the FA and the Ryman League later confirmed their punishment would stand.
However, Thurrock have promised to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, meaning the start of the Ryman League season could be delayed.
Reacting to the verdict, Sittingbourne secretary John Pitts said: "It's good news but we're not counting our chickens.
"If they go ahead with what they've threatened to do, it's still up in the air. It doesn't help our season in any way, shape or form.
"I don't really know what they think they might achieve. It's a tricky one and I still feel uncomfortable.
"Players that might have considered coming to us still might think it's not settled and they may well not come. The damage has been done as far as our club is concerned."
