Crowd favourite Hicham Akhazzan has left Sittingbourne after 11 years.

Forward Akhazzan, who scored 100 goals in 444 appearances, has joined Swale rivals Sheppey.

At 29, he felt the time was right to drop down to Southern Counties East but leaves with many happy memories and a testimonial against Chatham on Saturday, July 15.

He could have stayed at Woodstock Park but his mind was made up before he spoke to boss Nick Davis.

Akhazzan said: “I suppose I think Ryman League level is a step too far now with my age and pace.

“I went on loan to Lordswood at the end of last year and seemed to find myself OK at that level.

“To be fair, Nick did ask what my plans were and whether I was going to play.

“I kind of knew myself what I wanted to do, so I took the decision away from him.

“I’ll miss the board members and the fans - it’s like a family - and I’ll miss wearing the Sittingbourne shirt.

“When you’ve been at one club for such a long time, you feel like part of the furniture.

“It’s unheard of these days to stay at one club for 11 years. It never crossed my mind to leave.

“It wasn’t easy saying goodbye to the fans on the Facebook group. I sat there debating what to say. They’re the best fans.

“They’re always singing and it’s been a privilege to have so many songs about myself.

“A massive thank-you to everyone. I’ve loved every minute.”

Akhazzan rates the club’s sixth-placed finish in 2009, Kent Senior Cup glory a year later and his 40-yard volley against Faversham as highlights of his time at Sittingbourne.

A second Brickies player has joined Sheppey, with former captain Tom Brunt also making the move.
