Sittingbourne manager Ryan Maxwell outlines how the Brickies will approach their FA Trophy third-round tie against National League South Enfield Town

Manager Ryan Maxwell is confident Sittingbourne have another FA Trophy upset in them.

The Brickies face their sternest test yet when they host Enfield Town of National League South in the third round.

A big crowd is expected at Woodstock this Saturday (3pm) as Maxwell’s side bid to continue their record-breaking run in the competition by reaching the last 32.

They approach the tie in great spirits after scoring three times in an extraordinary opening five minutes to beat AFC Croydon and climb to second in Isthmian South East at the weekend.

And the Brickies won again last night, James Bessey-Saldanha scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory at Littlehampton.

They’re now only five points behind leaders Ramsgate, with a game in hand, after Ben Smith’s side lost their unbeaten record with a 2-1 defeat at East Grinstead.

Sittingbourne are used to springing upsets, beating Isthmian Premier leaders Dover in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy this season.

They also dispatched higher-league opposition in the form of Southern League Premier South Winchester, winning a penalty shoot-out, to reach round three of the Trophy for the first time.

Opponents Enfield are bottom of their league but, as the Step 2 club, they’re expected to beat Maxwell’s Step 4 team.

The Brickies boss has promised his players will give everything to pull off another shock result.

“There’s zero pressure on Sittingbourne,” said Maxwell.

“I want everyone to enjoy the occasion.

“We’re going to give it everything and leave it all out there.

“We’ll certainly not be worried or nervous - that isn’t happening.

“The thing is, who do you want to play? Bottom of Step 2 or top of Step 3?

“We’ve beaten Dover twice, so there won’t be any fear in my lads and I mean that. They don’t fear anybody.

“I don’t think it would have mattered who we played and where they were.

“I don’t think it makes a massive difference on the cup games.

“You can’t focus on the level, or where they’re at in their league.

“At the end of the day, it’s a cup game, it’s a one-off, and we’ll give it absolutely everything we’ve got to make sure the Sittingbourne fans come away proud no matter what happens.

“We might have made a little bit of history of late but that’s par for the course as a manager, you’re looking to break a record now and again.

“We are where we are off the back of some good work, yes, but I believe there’s another upset in us, I really do.

“Full respect to Enfield, of course, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was confident.”

The tie, which goes straight to penalties in the event of a draw at 90 minutes, is capturing the imagination of locals.

Maxwell hopes that leads to a big crowd at Woodstock where Sittingbourne have won all 10 league games this season, scoring 41 goals and conceding just three.

“I’d be disappointed if there wasn’t close to 8-900 there on Saturday,” he said.

“I know Enfield have great support and I’ve heard from Sittingbourne fans that lots of people who haven’t seen us recently are coming to the game.

“So I hope for a really good crowd.

“I’ve said many times this is the FA Cup for non-league teams.

“It’s a huge competition for us and even bigger the lower you go.”

Sittingbourne maintained their scintillating home form by blowing away AFC Croydon.

Joe Boachie, Troy Howard and a Ryan Kingsford penalty put them three up after five minutes.

The Rams replied with Nya Kirby’s spot-kick but were indebted to keeper Amadou Tangara for saving them from a heavy defeat.

“It was the most crazy five minutes I’ve ever managed,” said Maxwell.

“You always have a plan, you want to start fast, you highlight what you want to do right away.

“We targeted something and it just happened that this time we got the fruits of our labour.

“It doesn’t always happen but you have a plan to execute. The thing is, we executed it and got two of the goals from exactly what we spoke about before the game.

“It’s quite rare for it to happen once so fast but then twice was obviously unique and then to get the third goal, I’ve never managed a game like that before.

“It was nice to watch and full credit to the players.

“To be fair, Croydon did get a goal back but we were pretty comfortable and that was the best goalkeeping display I’ve ever seen against one of my sides.

“He was absolutely outstanding.

“He made about seven one-v-one saves and two great saves in open play.

“To win 10 in a row at home is a tremendous achievement and to do it in the manner we did was the icing on the cake.

“The boys have been fantastic and I really wanted to get to double digits for them.

“To start like that was a bit like ‘this is for your hard work’.

“You don’t always get your rewards right away but they did this time and maybe it’s come from working so hard.”
