Sittingbourne manager Mitchell May anticipates further Football League interest in striker Mitchell May after his flying start to the season

Sittingbourne boss Ryan Maxwell believes there will be further Football League interest in striker Mitchell May.

May, 21, attracted Championship attention last season and Maxwell is convinced the young forward has a big future.

He has four goals already this term after scoring a hat-trick in the Brickies’ 4-2 FA Cup win at Farnham on Saturday.

“It was nice for Mitch to get his hat-trick,” said Maxwell.

“He was outstanding on the day not just for his goals but his general play. I’m so pleased for him.

“He got up and running last week with a goal and now a hat-trick.

“He’s got some targets this year and we’ve had a chat about what those are and what it might mean if he hits them because I really do think there’s a very good prospect in Mitchell May.

“It’s not just his goals, he brings a lot to the team and he’s getting more mature.

“He played like a real man on Saturday and long may that continue.

“There was a Championship club taking a real interest last season and no doubt there’ll be more clubs watching after Saturday’s hat-trick. But I’ve told him it’s a process.

“He’ll have highs and he’ll have little dips in form, which is quite natural for a 21-year-old striker, but it’s about being consistent in his game and making sure he’s doing the fundamentals well even if he’s not scoring.

“Mitchell May is a great finisher but it’s about being a very good footballer at all times, and I believe he will certainly play higher up the levels.

“There’s still a bit to do but this year it’s all about being consistent.

“What I like about Mitch is he’s really aware of himself, where he’s at and what he needs to do.

“This time last year he went out on loan to Stansted at Step 5, then months later he’s got a Championship club tailing him, so he knows he’s in safe hands because he can see it unfolding.

“It’s all about hard work, you’ve got to be a good listener and if you are a good listener you’ve got a chance.

“He puts into practice what he’s getting told which is the definition of being coachable. That’s why he’s got a real chance.”
