Aslan Odev says it's one game at a time in his bid to land the Sittingbourne manager's job.
Bourne have lost only one of their past four Bostik South matches under caretaker boss Odev - a run that will do his chances no harm at all.
They have an opportunity to continue their good form at home to second-bottom Molesey on Saturday - and boost Odev's job claims.
He said: "Everyone's taking it a game at a time - I know I am.
"I'd like to keep the job but it's not down to me.
"I'm having to learn quickly but I'd rather jump in at the deep end and do it that way.
"I feel I'm handling it OK.
"I'm trying to make an impression and show I'm working hard and have that drive and ambition to succeed.
"I hope it pays off - the players are buying into it."
Bourne, in 15th, will break the 50-point barrier if they avoid defeat against struggling Molesey but Odev is taking nothing for granted.
He said: "We need to make sure we being our A game and go into it with the right mindset, otherwise the tempo can soon go stale.
"We need a high tempo and to move the ball well and play to our identity."
Teenager David Smith earned a point for Sittingbourne at Ramsgate on Easter Monday, scoring a second-half penalty.
Odev said: "He's so good. He's a very, very good young player.
"He's still learning his trade and the intricacies of football at this level, when to clear your lines, when to create half a yard, but he's learning quickly.
"He's determined, ambitious and a good lad and with the right coaching and playing more games, he'll only get better. I'm pleased with him."
