Brickies midfielder Luke Girt suffered a cut lip after he was punched in the face – by an opposition manager.

Girt was struck by Eastbourne Town player-boss Tony Reid, who has since resigned, following Sittingbourne’s 4-2 away win last Wednesday.

Bourne joint-manager Matt Wyatt said: “Luke had a cut lip and was a bit shaken up. Luke did nothing wrong. He’s made a statement and it’s up to Eastbourne and the FA to sort the matter out.”

The match boiled over when Town’s Spencer Sachies was sent off for headbutting Girt. A tackle by Girt – deemed fair by the referee – then angered Reid, who approached the Sittingbourne man in the tunnel after the game and punched him.

Eastbourne apologised and informed Brickies of Reid’s resignation.

Sittingbourne secretary John Pitts said: “Luke was sensible and walked away but there was a lot of blood. I know their secretary, Mark Potter, very well and he couldn’t apologise enough. I also had a call from the chairman, David Jenkins, the next day. He apologised profusely.

Mr Jenkins told the Sittingbourne News Extra Reid had resigned due to work commitments and declined to comment further.

Sittingbourne's Tuesday night game against Three Bridges was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. They visit Burgess Hill on Saturday.
