Sheppey United’s assistant boss praised the team for their continued play-off challenge despite being up against it.
The Ites picked up another point on Saturday with a 2-2 draw at Eastbourne Town.
Sheppey’s no.2 Geoff Record said: “To be at this stage and for us to still be in with a shout of that fifth place is all credit to the football club and the players because there are some good teams in this league and we’re not out of it.
“There are 16 games left and all we can do is hang in there and try and take it to the wire.
“Trying to win these games has been difficult with the injuries to Danny Leonard and Jacob Lambert in particular.
“They are the two players who can turn a game within a matter of minutes, with their goalscoring ability, and to have them both out, we have missed them both.
“Jacob is long-term, he has a medial ligament injury in his knee and Danny Leonard we are hoping he is a couple of weeks away.
“We just have to soldier on and do the best we can. All the time we do that we have a chance because we can still play some good football.
“We have conceded goals but to be fair to the lads they played quite well at the back on Saturday.
“It is so hard when we are asking full-backs to play at centre-half but we are still in there with a chance. We have a back four but the four are full-backs!”
Sheppey twice went ahead against Eastbourne but were twice pegged back. Birthday-boy Jordy Ndozid opened the scoring midway through the first half but then conceded a penalty which the home side converted.
Lekan Majoyegbe put Sheppey in front again on 77 minutes but shortly after the hosts got back on level terms.
Record said: “Overall, a draw was a fair result, but first half (goalkeeper) Aiden Prall pulled off one good save, pushing it onto the bar, but we could have been 3-1 up as we missed what I considered were two good chances.”
Victor Aiye missed the target after good work out wide from Dan Bradshaw and Gil Carvaho and later in the half James Taylor teed up Carvalho with a ball in behind the defence but the chance went begging.
Record said: “When you go away you need to be putting those away and we missed them both but we scored a couple of good goals.”
