Woodstock Sports Football Club have announced they are folding at the end of the season.
The news came in a statement on the club’s website which said: “It is with great regret and sadness to announce that Woodstock Sports Football Club will fold at the end of the 2014-15 season.
“Quite simply, we do not have a sustainable business plan and the funding is simply not there for another season.
“This breaks our hearts as we have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to build the foundations of the club over the past few years and our progression is a testament to the monumental time and effort the committee, especially Colin Page, has put into the club on a daily basis.”
The timing comes as something of a surprise in view of the fact Woodstock, who changed their name from Norton Sports in June 2011, have enjoyed a much better campaign than last year when they finished bottom of the Southern Counties East League with just 13 points.
In contrast, they have already gained 48 points this time around under manager Lee Hockey and go into Saturday’s final match at home to Sevenoaks Town knowing that victory will secure them 10th place in the table.
Boss Hockey said: "It's a shame but for the lads it might be a blessing in disguise as some of them should be playing higher and hopefully this will push one or two of them out of their comfort zone and help them fulfil their potential.
"The odd one or two might take a step back and join someone like Sheppey but from what I've heard it sounds like the right thing to fold.
"We get 32 fans and it's not sustainable. Realistically we were going to lose four or five in the summer and then you've got to produce another miracle to pluck more players from somewhere. It's disappointing but hopefully we finish in the top 10."
The demise of Woodstock means that neither Erith Town or Rochester United will be relegated at the end of this season. The two teams had looked to be battling it out this Saturday to avoid being bottom in Southern Counties East and relegated to the Kent Invicta League.
Instead, Woodstock's decision means that no team will be relegated at the end of the season.
