Stefan Wright has made a shock move from Sittingbourne to Greenwich Borough.
Midfielder Wright has trebled his money after an unexpected approach from Boro boss Gary Alexander.
The 21-year-old also has a Ryman League Division 1 South promotion challenge to get stuck into but still found it hard to leave Sittingbourne.
Brickies boss Nick Davis said: “I had a phone call from Gary Alexander to let me know he was going to put seven days in for Stef.
“I wouldn’t have thought he’d be their type of player.
“The money he’s on there pays his rent each week. You can’t blame him for going.
“It was still tough for him because he loved it here and he said he owes me for giving him a chance.
“He’s a loyal lad, he had to travel from Lewisham, but he’d always turn up.”
Davis admired Wright’s workrate and assumes Alexander, the former Millwall striker, has seen the same qualities.
He added: “They’ve watched him a couple of times and it’s obviously his energy and his ability to get about the pitch that’s appealed.
“Stef would be the first to admit he’s not everyone’s cup of tea but he gives you so much energy - he’s got a great engine.
“I’ve always seen that in him and Gary Alexander, someone who played in the Football League, has seen it too.
“If he could do both sides of the game he wouldn’t be playing at this level but that’s not to say he couldn’t surprise you with some of what he did on the ball.
“I’m personally sad to see him go because I brought him to the club and he was one of mine.”
Sittingbourne conceded a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Herne Bay last night.
They host struggling Molesey on Saturday.
