Police spokeswoman Rosemary Alexander said: "He made a purchase but when the till opened he reached across the counter and stole a quantity of cash.
"He was holding a knife in his hand, but did not threaten the shop assistant with it. He left the shop and ran off across the garage forecourt towards Tenterden."
The robber is described as white, about 5ft 10in tall, and was wearing a dark blue ‘beeny’ hat with an unknown symbol on it. He was also wearing a dark jumper and dark trousers."
