“Sleep well mum, love you” - a simple note attached to a bunch of flowers tells of a tragic loss.

It has been left pinned to a hedgerow in Cranbrook Road, near Tenterden, where a woman in her 80s died in a car crash.

A Peugeot Independence and a Nissan Qashqai were involved in the accident at about 5pm on Saturday.

The woman, who was from East Malling, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.

She had been travelling as a passenger in the Peugeot at the time of the crash.

Witness Matt Thomas said: "It all happened about 5pm and police closed the road until midnight while they were carrying out their investigations."

Mr Thomas is trained in first aid but he says that his wife Shernaz, who first came across the scene after leaving home in the car to pick up their teenage daughter, was told by an eyewitness that everyone was OK.

The construction manager says he should have gone down to the scene just metres from his house to see if he could do anything to help but he thought no one was hurt.
