Scouts face £32,000 bill for hut repairs

A Scouts group is faced with losing its headquarters if thousands of pounds cannot be raised to save it from deterioration.
According to 2nd Tenterden Scout Group, the hut, in Bells Lane, is in dire need of repair with a bill estimated at £32,000 to tackle just some of the problems.
Mary Philo, Scout secretary said: “The roof is leaking badly and we have been quoted £17,000 plus VAT to remove the asbestos roof and replace it.
“The toilets keep flooding and the water has to be turned off at the stopcock when no one is on the premises.
“We have been quoted £15,000 plus VAT to update these.”
The hut is often used four times a week by about 70 Cubs, Scouts, Beavers and Explorer Scouts and has been the HQ for the past 35 years.
There is a waiting list to join the group.
Mrs Philo added: “The kitchen is also on its last legs. On one oven the electric rings don’t work and the fridge broke down recently.
“New cupboards are needed as well and the window frames are wooden and need urgent attention.”
She added: “Although the group has been saving its money raised through the annual firework displays, funds cannot stretch this far.”
Anyone who can help with fund-raising and/or with repairing the hut can contact Mike Pearson on 01580 764413 (evenings only).
