A charity shop was targeted in a sickening theft.

The window at Demelza Hospice Care for Children in Tenterden High Street was smashed and two designer handbags taken from the display.

A DKNY brown and red canvas clutch-type bag and a black leather Kate Hill bag with butterfly motif were removed from the window.

The Kate Hill bag was new and priced at £32.99 and the DKNY bag was secondhand with a £25 price tag.

Shop manager Christina Harry discovered the theft on Tuesday morning when she arrived to open the premises.

She said: “The bags were on sale for more than £50 together but the cost of replacing the window will far outweigh this.

“It’s all money that should have being going to support sick children and their families.

“To steal from a charity shop is a hideous thing and about as low as you can go.”

A police spokesman said: "We received a report of a burglary at the Demelza charity shop in Tenterden High Street.

Overnight on Monday, March 26, the window was damaged and a designer handbag was reported stolen.
