The owner of a stolen vintage Land Rover is appealing for people to help him find the vehicle that was given to him by his dad as a teenager.

Henry Mowforth, 30, had the vehicle stolen from the car park at Rolvenden railway station, Rolvenden Road, where he works on the steam engines.

The Series 1 Land Rover made in 1954 is worth around £10,000 on the open market but Henry said it had great sentimental value.

He wrote on his Facebook: "Thanks to modern society and thieving scumbags my faithful Land Rover was stolen from a locked car park at Rolvenden on Sunday night."

Thieves lifted the gates from the hinges to take the vehicle, thought to have been removed on a trailer.

"There have been quite a few Land Rovers stolen and it was deliberately targeted as it was in a locked compound.

"The theft of Land Rovers is endemic and vintage models and Defenders are been taken," said Henry.

"The Series 1 Land Rover is not a common vehicle so if anyone has seen it being driven or parked anywhere can they please contact police."

Henry's Land Rover was his first car given to him as a 17-year-old by his dad and the pair rebuilt the engine together.

"I'm not worried about how much it's worth but it's the fact that they have taken my Land Rover," he said.

Henry added that thieves had also attempted to take the vehicle from outside his home and he had found the ignition barrel smashed.

The vehicle has the registration number SSY 841 and was stolen between 7pm on Sunday night and 6am Monday morning.

Police have issued the crime reference number ZY/35302/16 and can be contacted on 101.
