A cat owner made a grim discovery when opening a box of cat food today.

Elspeth Harper from Tenterden bought the box of pouches from her local Tesco three days ago, only opening them today.

She said: "It stunk and I thought one of the packets had split open and had turned, as it was a new box.

"It took a while to realise it wasn’t cat food bits, but actual little bugs and empty shells.

"I ended up dropping one of the packets on the floor when I realised and bug sprayed it before noticing the whole box was rife."

Eggs are also visible among the detritus, leaving her with the fear that the warehouse it came from could have an infestation.

On her Facebook post about the incident, she said: "I obviously didn’t keep the recipt and even if I did I wouldn’t put the box in my car anyway.

"I cannot find where to raise the matter online or direct to that store and it might be that the product needs to be recalled.

"I’m not worried about the refund as these things happen, I’m just more worried the product from whatever warehouse they got it from needs to be recalled."

Her main question now is what species the bugs are, and whether other people will have the same experience

She later noted that "Tesco have been super helpful with it and I’m not even sure it was their fault."
