A FATHER has been jailed for four years after a jury found that he was responsible for a "catastrophic" brain injury which killed his baby daughter.
Barry Wood was cleared of causing previous injuries of two fractures to the head of three-month-old Olivia and a fractured leg.
The 33-year-old was told by a judge that he had been convicted of manslaughter on clear evidence.
Wood had claimed that the child fell out of his arms and hit her head on furniture at their home in St Benet’s Way, Tenterden, near Ashford.
But medical experts found that the fatal injury would have required severe impact to the head and could not have been caused by a fall or heavy-handedness.
Robin Johnson, prosecuting, said when Olivia was examined after her death, she was found to have the old injuries, including two fractures on either side of her head and a fractured leg.
Maidstone Crown Court was told that Wood met his girlfriend Sarah in 2003 and their baby was born on October 26 2004.
