A village Post Office and fish and chip shop has been put on the market for almost £1m.

Husband-and-wife team Liz and Jamie Entwistle have owned the prominent site in St Michaels, near Tenterden, for 11 years.

But they have now decided it is time to move on and are selling the whole building – which includes a large four-bedroom house – for £950,000.

Mrs Entwistle, who is hoping to retrain as a lawyer, says the couple had always planned to sell up after 10 years.

"We actually relocated the chip shop from half a mile down the road so we have had it for 25 years," she said.

"It's a long old time and our children are older now so we feel it's the right time to do other things.

"I've been doing an Open University law degree which I graduated from last year and I'm now doing a legal practice course. I want to have a change."

The pair decided to relocate the fish and chip shop as the Post Office was so big.

"We bought the fish and chip shop in 1997 and after 14 years the landlord didn't want to renew the lease so we had to move our business," Mrs Entwistle said.

"The Post Office and the property was for sale so we thought it would be a perfect place to split the shop in half and put the chip shop in one side and the Post Office in the other.

"It's worked really well.

"It was a very large shop before we split it into two and it's worked really well as they both complement each other."

Mrs Entwistle, 45, says having the house right next to the property, which sits on A28 Ashford Road, has helped with bringing up her four children.

"All our children have worked in the shops from young ages," she said.

"We're a really close community here – lots of our customers have seen the children grow up and see our staff who have been with us a long time.

"When we fully moved in, my youngest was two years old and now she's 13. Lots of our customers like to ask how our children are doing.

"We will really miss that."

Mrs Entwistle hopes to stay in the Tenterden area after selling up.

"My husband has lived in Tenterden since he was 11 and I've lived here for the past 25 years," she said.

"We are local people and know a lot of people around here.

"We're going to have to see where it all takes us.

"My husband is hoping to take it a bit easier as the chip shop is really physical work so he is hoping to semi retire."

All fixtures and fittings are included in the sale price, with "great scope" to increase trade further.
