Sarah Cleaton took over the venue with then-co-owner Ray Pratt in 2018, having been home to a Chinese restaurant for the previous 50 years.

Announcing the closure on social media, Ms Cleaton said: “Sadly, we will be closing the doors of This Ancient Boro on Sunday.

“It’s been a very hard decision, but hospitality is a struggling business these days.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fabulous staff and my very loyal customers (many that have become very good friends).

“It really means the world to me.

“It’s sad to go, but I’m very grateful for the support I’ve received.”

The post also revealed that the building will not be empty for long, as it will be taken over by a Thai restaurant.

The statement added: “Watch this space for the opening of Tamarind Thai coming soon, which will still have a bar area, so hopefully, your love and support will continue as we venture into pastures new.”

The announcement was met with a huge outpouring from many who were sad to see the beloved pub close its doors.

Steve Hamlin commented: “You and your team could not have done anything else to make this the friendly and welcoming place it is!

“As we know, running a business nowadays is a tough ride, and I truly hope you can have a more relaxed and happy future.

“Thanks for some happy memories.”

Margaret White added: “We’re so sorry to hear this, Sarah; we’ll miss the beer, the food and the wonderful welcome. Best wishes for whatever the future holds.”

Others were also excited about the future plans, with the new Thai restaurant set to open in the former pub as a joint venture between Sarah and The Lemongrass in Rye.

Lorraine French-Skinner commented: “This must have been an extremely difficult decision for you. However, going forward, I wish you all the very best for your future plans.

“Good luck to Tamarind Thai - can’t wait for continuity in the community.”

Previously, the Secret Drinker visited This Ancient Boro and was full of praise for the welcoming atmosphere at the thoughtfully decorated boozer and the good selection of beverages on offer.
