CCTV cameras were damaged when thieves swiped two "extremely heavy" generators and a grinder from a volunteer-run railway.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the theft from the Kent and East Sussex Railway's Rolvenden station in Maytham Road.

It is believed the burglary happened sometime between 5.30pm and 9pm on Monday.

Officers say a man was was seen acting suspiciously in the area at about 5.30pm.

The Tenterden-based railway, a registered charity, relies on an small army of volunteers to keep its steam trains and carriages in pristine condition for the enjoyment of thousands of visitors from home and abroad who travel on the picturesque line to Bodiam.

Inspector Jason Atkinson said: "These generators would have been extremely heavy and is likely to have required at least two people and a van to move them.

"We would ask any residents who noticed anything suspicious in the area during these times or who may have been passing and has dashcam footage to contact us on 01843 222289 quoting reference 46/33354/19."

Last year, staff were left sickened after vandals damaged a carriage at the railway's Tenterden station.
