Sailor Elizabeth sets sights on GB place
Published: 00:00, 29 November 2001
YOUNG sailor Elizabeth Murch can be optimistic about her future after being selected for the Great Britain squad in her age group. Elizabeth, 12, who lives at Tenterden, and is a member of Bewl Valley Sailing Club, was among the leading competitors selected from more than 200 children in three major events during the year.
She now has the chance to work with national coaches and compete for a place in the GB team for the European and World Championships. Elizabeth, a pupil at Bedgebury School, Goudhurst, has been sailing since she was eight. She and her sister, Alice, 10, were introduced to the sport by their parents, James and Fiona, who are both keen sailors.
Mr Murch said: "She has her own Optimist dinghy. Many Olympic competitors start to learn in similar boats. However, it is getting a bit old, and suffering wear and tear, compared with those used by most of the other children in the squad. They cost about £2,000 new, so it would be nice if she could find a sponsor to support her."
