Sophie Gilbert, club steward at Tenterden Golf Club, has been named as an ‘Unsung Hero’ by England Golf.
She received the accolade as a result of her considerable efforts to support members of the club during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Jeremy Tomlinson, chief executive of England Golf, said in a letter to Gilbert: “We were told how you went above and beyond during lockdowns, organising food parcels due to the shortages in the supermarkets, buying various sought-after items in bulk from suppliers and distributing them between the food parcels.
“In addition to that you have been assisting vulnerable and shielding members with picking up prescriptions and anything else they may need.
“You are a star and an absolute asset to the club.”
Gilbert, who lives in Tenterden and has worked at the club for two years, said: “At the beginning of the pandemic particularly, a number of our older members were scared and vulnerable, and finding it difficult to get food.
“Through the club I had contacts for supplies which I could box up and deliver. Our club is a very friendly one at it was great to be able to help in various ways.”
