A man who went above and beyond the call of duty to stop a suspect from fleeing the scene of a burglary has been honoured for his bravery.
Ioannis Tzitziras, 42, was leaving his flat in Margate when he found that his neighbour had been a victim of burglary.
The woman, who was seven months pregnant at the time, had arrived home to find a burglar in her bedroom.
He tried to leave and pushed past her and as he left she could be heard shouting "my money, he stole my money".
Mr Tzitziras gave chase and managed to detain the man.
He was then approached by a woman connected to the offender who tried to cause a disturbance and persuade him to let the suspect go.
The suspect tried to escape several times and at one point he was successful, but Mr Tzitziras again gave chase and managed to detain him by which time the police had been called by a local shopkeeper.
He was arrested and charged with burglary and later sentenced to three years in prison.
Detective Sergeant Keith Taylorwho oversaw the investigation into the burglary said: "Ioannis Tzitziras actions at the scene simply go above and beyond what could be expected from a member of the public.
"I applaud his bravery in detaining the suspect until our officers arrived.
"I am confident that as a direct result of Mr Tzitiras actions, a significant number of burglaries have been prevented.
"His bravery, public spiritedness and the impact of his actions within the local community are worthy of recognition."
Mr Tzitziras was presented with a silver award at the 50th annual National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) Police and Public Bravery Awards in Manchester on Saturday.
The awards recognise members of the public for actions which support police in preserving law and order.
