A baker was left heartbroken after seeing a converted caravan she sold sweet treats from, go up in flames.

Yesterday evening, firefighters were called to Dane Park in Margate over the blaze.

The fire was put out roughly 20 minutes after firefighters’ arrival and no injuries were reported.

The van used to be known as The Bakewell Cart and was owned by Sally Martin who runs Bun in the Oven Cakery.

After purchasing the caravan in September 2022, the baker fixed up the vehicle with the help of her partner Dan Matharu, who runs Prestige Paint & Powder Coat Ltd and did the original paintwork. She then sold cakes from the portable stall at a Christmas market.

However, the 34-year-old explained that the market that year was not as “lucrative” as previous years so decided to sell the project.

She said: “We thought perhaps the van was putting people off or they didn't realise it was us so we decided to go back to using our gazebo and sold the van for less than we'd originally paid.

“It needed more work done to it, but we wanted it to be a great project for someone.”

She sold the van in January 2023, but says it was then abandoned at Dane Park. This is despite the buyer claiming they planned to do more work to the converted caravan before taking it abroad, Miss Martin says.

Seeing the van go up in flames yesterday was heartbreaking for her.

“We lost around £2,000 on it so seeing it all up in flames when it could have been so much more was awful,” she says.

“Now it's nothing, I just feel like we should have saved ourselves the hours of work and just set fire to our money.

“When we sold it, we said we'd remove all our logos but the person who bought it said they’d do it all as they were going to strip it and paint it.

“It was sat there for a few months with my logo all over it. I kept messaging them to tell them to move it and sort it out but they just ignored my messages.”

She added the council then put a notice on the vehicle so Miss Martin removed the logos left on the caravan herself.

Witness Jamie Bullock spotted the vehicle alight at about 6.20pm and took a video of it which showed it engulfed in flames.

He said: “The flames were bursting out from the roof and bits of the caravan shooting out from the roof and sides.”

The cause of the fire is unknown.
