Volunteers who helped the team at Quartet Community Allotment in Garlinge as they prepared the site for winter also dug in to a slice or two of pizza, cooked on site in a clay oven, as a reward for their efforts.

Young helpers included two-year-old twins Alfie and Reece Cloves, Rachel Wood, 10, and eight-year-old Alysia Crine.

The Saturday afternoon tasks included clearing the area, picking produce and harvesting pumpkins to keep the Brooke Avenue allotment site in tip-top condition for the cold months ahead.
