Tesco on lockdown as armed man seen near Westwood Cross shopping centre in Broadstairs

An arrest has been made after a supermarket had to be put on lockdown following sightings of an armed man.

Firearms officers were sent to Westwood Road near Westwood Cross shopping centre in Margate Road, Broadstairs, just before 7am.

Customers and staff were told to remain inside Tesco Extra.

Police were told the suspect was carrying a gun and at first could not locate him.

A 32-year-old homeless man has now been arrested in connection with the incident.

A BB gun was recovered at the scene.

Spokesman Scarlet Drayson said: "Patrols and firearms officers were called to Westwood Road at 6.47am where they carried out a search and arrested a 32-year-old man of no fixed address in connection with the incident.

"No threats or injuries were reported.

"The man currently remains in custody while inquiries are ongoing."
