Margate: Binman assaulted while collecting rubbish in Mere Gate

A binman has reportedly been attacked while collecting rubbish this afternoon.

Police were called just after midday to Mere Gate in Margate to reports that a worker had been assaulted.

Thanet District Council has condemned those who carried out the alleged assault, saying there is "absolutely no justification" for it.

In response to reports that members of the refuse collection team were targeted, Gavin Waite, director of operational services, said: “Attacks on the public servants who serve our communities are totally unacceptable.

"There is absolutely no justification for any worker to be threatened or abused while doing their job.

"Our refuse collectors carry out a vital role in keeping our community clean and tidy and this type of behaviour directed towards our staff will not be tolerated.

"The matter is currently being investigated by the police.”

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 12.16pm on Tuesday 17 October to a report of an assault on a man in Mere Gate, Margate.

"Patrols attended and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident."
