Campaigners calling for a "cleaner and greener Thanet" have gathered outside Thanet District Council's offices in Margate.

It comes as part of the international Global Climate Strike, aimed at putting pressure on the government to take action against climate change.

A number of protests are taking place across the county today to highlight young people's demands for the government to commit to changing its environmental policy.

A spokesman or Fight2Unite Thanet, who are hosting the protest in Margate, said: "We are a youth led organisation which is made up of about 10 people.

"We organised the protest as part of the Global Youth Strike. There have been about 60 people here so far, mostly young people but there are people of all ages joining in.

"We are protesting to raise awareness around climate change and to create a cleaner and greener Thanet.

"We started the day painting signs and once the signs were made we sat on the stairs and played dead at the entrance of the Thanet District Council offices and we are going to march to the Turner Contemporary.

"We are protesting for the Thanet council to tell us the truth about what they are doing to help the local environment, call a citizens assembly and to do more to save our only world."
