Beach hut fire in Royal Esplanade in Margate

A discarded barbecue is thought to have started a fire at a beach hut.

It is believed to have been started accidentally as a result of heat radiating from the barbecue, which had been discarded between the hut and the promenade.

Two fire engines were sent to Royal Esplanade in Margate at about 11.50pm, with firefighters using a hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze.

Following the incident, crews are reminding people to be cautious when have a barbecue.

A spokesman said: "Remember to keep barbecues away from buildings, sheds, fences, overhanging branches and any other foliage that could catch fire.

"Never leave barbecues unattended and when the cooking is finished, ensure it has been fully extinguished and cooled."
