One of Kent's main major roads has been closed by police due to flooding.

Kent County Council Highways confirmed the A299 Thanet Way was shut in both directions.

Officials said the Eddington Interchange pumps have now been fixed and floodwater is being removed should clear soon.

It comes after flood defences were shut in a bid to stop water levels rising on the Thanet coastline ahead of a predicted tidal surge.

Thanet District Council (TDC) has taken the decision to close floodgates at Minnis Bay, Birchington, St Mildred’s Bay, Westgate, and around Marine Drive and the Rendezvous in Margate.

There are concerns there could be an increased risk of tidal flooding due to the forecast poor weather.

The pavement on the seaward side of Marine Drive and the Parade in Margate will also be closed as part of the precautionary measures.

The gates will be closed this afternoon and tomorrow.

The emergency planning department at TDC is working closely with the Met Office, Environment Agency and Kent Highways to take the necessary precautions.

The council says despite this, there are no plans to distribute sand bags to properties in the north of the district.
