Footage has emerged of a drunk man hurling abuse at train staff before jumping onto the tracks.

The video has been released by Network Rail as part of a campaign to prevent deaths and near-misses around train stations over the Christmas period.

The man in the film can be seen shouting and pushing Southeastern enforcement officers on the platform at Ramsgate station before climbing down onto the track.

He continues to hurl a foul-mouthed tirade at the workers as they urge him to calm down and get off the tracks.

The man was later arrested.

It comes as Network Rail reports a 25% rise in alcohol-related incidents across the network last December compared to the beginning of the year.

Meanwhile, more than 4,000 booze-fuelled incidents were reported over the past five years - almost 400 of which happened when people were boarding or getting off trains.

Network Rail's head of public and passenger safety, Allan Spence, said: “We want everyone to have fun over the festive season, but it is also important to remind passengers and those living near the railway that it can be a dangerous place. After a few drinks people can take more risks.

"Taking a short cut across the tracks, taking risks at level crossings and running across platforms and onto trains can result in serious life-changing injuries or death.

"We are urging passengers to keep a clear head and enjoy the festive season safely.”
