Former Thanet council leader Iris Johnston has announced she will not be standing for re-election.

Cllr Johnston, who represents Margate central ward, says she will instead retire next May, as she is turning 70 later this year.

The Labour councillor succeeded Clive Hart as leader of Thanet council in 2014.

Cllr Johnston said: "I will be turning 70 in October, and having had the honour of being elected since 1995 and previously managed the Labour helpline in our home, next May is a good time to retire.

"I have been very lucky to have had amazing support from Thanet residents, Labour, and other political colleagues along with the staff at TDC and KCC."
