Concerns have been raised over the impact an “overbearing” storage warehouse at business in Ramsgate, would have on nearby residents.

Bosses say the facility at Ramsgate Garden Centre, would help the business fend off rival competition and “enhance economic success”.

But objectors are calling for the proposals to be rejected by Thanet District Council.

The business, off Montefiore Avenue, had a previous application for a larger warehouse thrown out earlier this year.

British Garden Centres - the firm which runs the site - has now launched a second attempt to get the green light.

The warehouse - measuring 317 sqm - would be used for seasonal stock, such as Christmas goods and fixtures which are not needed on display all-year round.

Documents submitted with the plans state: “The proposed development is required in order to assist in the ongoing modernisation and future-proofing of the garden centre business. The improvements will help the centre to remain attractive to customers and compete effectively against other similar facilities.

“The new facilities will enable the garden centre to retain and enhance its economic success, retain as well as create jobs for the local area and improve its attractiveness in the face of increased competition from outlets such as supermarkets, DIY stores and discount stores that are increasingly selling garden-related products.”

Ramsgate Town Council has however objected to the scheme, stressing that the “bulk of the proposed building is overbearing on the adjacent residential dwelling”. It says the warehouse is out-of-keeping with the residential area, and thus against the district authority’s Local Plan guidelines.

Neighbour Kevin Harrington has also lodged an objection, citing fears over the size of the warehouse and the potential noise disturbance emanating from the site.

The applicants are however confident the revised scheme has addressed the problems raised in the first bid, with the reduced height and decreased footprint of the building.

If approved, the warehouse will have an area clad in solar panels.
