Organisers are fundraising to recover "huge costs" to bring a community event back after bad weather forced it to be cancelled.

The Cliftonville Games were abandoned on Saturday with strong winds and rain battering Thanet.

The day is run by GRASS (Gordon Road Area Street Scheme) volunteers who say they were "gutted" to call off the day.

Wet weather on Saturday cancelled Saturday's Cliftonville Games event with organisers needing to raise thousands of pounds if the event will return this year. Picture: Cliftonville Games/Facebook (14441843)

Costs to hire the Oval Lawns from Thanet District Council (TDC) and spending money on fresh food were the biggest factors in losing the money.

Now GRASS is pleading with the community to help put the event on again and are now trying to raise £3,000 for another one later this year.

In a statement on the Cliftonville Games Facebook page, organisers said: "We are completely gutted and have set up a GoFundMe to see if we can bring this amazing community event to life before the year ends.

"Honestly we are so sad. We have huge costs to now recoup including site fees hire from TDC and we have lots of fresh food losses. We would like to thank our amazing volunteers we couldn’t have even got this far without you."

The group had already set up the ground with 15 gazebos with one of the brand new tents damaged due to the wind.

The games is a free event which first started in 2003 and last year more than 5,000 people attended.

It was due to feature an array of stalls, market, street food, dog show, arts and crafts stands, live music, rodeo bull, races and bouncy castles for children.

To help donate visit the GoFundMe page or contact GRASS via the group's website.
