The ongoing saga of the Margate Banksy has provided rich pickings for anyone handy with photo editing software this week, as these pictures show.

The council sparked outrage on Tuesday when the chest freezer that forms a vital part of the artist's Valentine's Day Mascara piece in Grosvenor Place was removed.

It was later returned after being made safe, only to be carted away again by a gallery eager to preserve the potentially valuable artwork.

The chest freezer is currently in storage, and the painting itself is due to be removed from the wall by a gallery from Essex.

It is hoped the art will spend some time on display at the Turner Contemporary, complete with the freezer.

Thanet residents have since started a petition calling for the artwork to remain in Margate, as they feel "it was gifted to the area by the artist".

Chris Joy who set up the appeal said: "Our area is already underfunded.

"Gifts like this can help to boost the culture and tourism.

"It is not right that it has been taken away from us without any community discussion."

The petition has so far gathered almost 200 signatures.
