A mum is urging a hit-and-run driver involved in a crash which left her daughter with a broken neck to "do the decent thing" and hand themselves in.

Amy Taylor, from Birchington, is currently in the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford recovering from severe injuries, including a broken spine and pelvis.

The 34-year-old was involved in a three-vehicle crash on Sunday in Shottendane Road, with one of the drivers - believed to be a woman with a child - leaving the scene without speaking to police.

A search of the area was carried out by officers, with support from the coastguard helicopter, but she was not located.

After being freed from her car, mum-of-one Amy was bluelighted to hospital and has been there ever since.

She is now awaiting an MRI scan, with medics believing there to be even more damage to her spine than first thought.

Gina Mapes, mum of Amy, says it has been a difficult week, particularly with being unable to be with her daughter due to Covid restrictions.

She is now making a fresh appeal for the missing driver to come forward.

"Do the right thing, do the decent thing - you'll get caught in the end," she said.

"How can someone walk away not knowing whether they've left a person dead or alive?

"She might have been injured when she left the scene. The child could be injured.

"I'm appealing to her better nature to come forward. She will be caught and it will make it easier on herself to hand herself in now."

She says the woman is understood to have left on foot along Margate Hill in the direction of Acol, and that the car she was in was unregistered.

Ms Mapes says Amy suffered multiple injuries.

"She has a break in her neck, she has a broken lower spine and broken pelvis," she said.

"They've been trying to get her up to move about, but her injuries are bad.

"The break in her spine doesn't require an operation, which is good, but now she's got to have an MRI scan as the doctors think there's further damage."

Police confirmed officers were called to a report of a crash involving three vehicles just before 7pm on Sunday.

"Officers and Secamb attended Manston Road near the junction with Shottendane Road in Birchington," she said.

"A search of the area assisted by the HMS Coastguard helicopter was carried out following a report that the occupants of one of the vehicles had left before speaking to officers.

"Two people reported injuries and were taken to hospital."
