Crash between car and pedestrian outside Ursuline College closes A28

A crash between a car and woman outside a college has triggered an emergency service response.

The accident happened at 12pm today outside Ursuline College on Canterbury Road A28 in Westgate-on-Sea, where a vehicle is overturned.

Police and other emergency services remain at the scene, where traffice has been halted in both directions.

Firefighters used hydraulic equipment to remove the door of the car.

A police spokesman said: “We are currently at the scene of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian in Canterbury Road, Westgate.

“Kent Police was called just after 12pm - South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service are also at the scene.”

A spokesman from the college confirmed it was not one of their pupils involved in the crash.

Eye-witnesses said on social media the “horrendous” crash involved a car hitting a speed camera.

The accident is understood to have happened on the westbound side of the road, while the A28 is closed from Minster Road to Epple Road, according to the Inrix traffic website.

Meanwhile, the school has notified parents the road could be closed for a significant amount of time and to make alternative arrangements to pick up their children.

A Fire Rescue Service spokesman said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a crash involving one vehicle and a pedestrian in Canterbury Road, in Westgate-on-Sea.

“Three fire engines attended, and crews used hydraulic equipment to remove the door of the vehicle.

“The driver was then passed into the care of SECAmb paramedics, who also went to the aid of the pedestrian involved.”

An ambulance service spokesman stated: “I can confirm that SECAmb was called at approximately midday today (June 13) to reports of an RTC involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in which the vehicle had reportedly overturned.

“Ambulance crews attended and two people, a female pedestrian, and a male driver of the vehicle were assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to QEQM Hospital in Margate.”
