Friends and family of a dad and former running coach have spoken of their "profound shock" following his sudden death.

Tributes have been paid to electrician Richard Stirk, who had lived in Margate and was described as a "fantastic motivator of others" by his former running club.

A spokesman for Thanet Roadrunners says the 45-year-old's death, who coached youngsters at the club for years, has come as a "huge shock".

"Richard was fantastic motivator of others," an online tribute said.

"He took his coaching seriously, but didn’t take himself too seriously.

"He loved his family, his music and his running.

"Thanet Roadrunners would like to express our profound shock at his sudden passing and send our thoughts to his family and friends."

"He was a genuinely nice guy and great to be around..."

Friend Gary Gillatt, who was also a coach at Thanet Roadrunners, says his death came as a "shock to everyone".

"He was very enthusiastic with his coaching and training," the 62-year-old said.

"He gave everything and I couldn’t say anything nasty about him.

"He was a genuinely nice guy and great to be around.

"Some of his older students are absolutely gutted to hear about his passing.

"He has left nothing but a lovely legacy. He was very active in the club."

Mr Stirk had coached youngsters aged eight to 18 between 2012 and 2017.

It is understood he was a dad to twins and was also a step-father.

Mr Gillatt added: "He was very focused on his training.

"He was very quiet in the early days but then his character and personality came out.

"You could see a very lively and happy go lucky person in his coaching."

Mr Stirk's cause of death has not been revealed.
