Firefighters are still at the scene of a massive blaze on an industrial estate in Margate more than a day after it started.

Five crews were still dealing with the fire at 6pm this evening, with tightly packed bales stored inside the building being pulled out at the abandoned Cummins Power Generation building in Star Lane.

At its height 14 fire engines were at the scene, where a plume of thick black some could be seen from as far away as Sandwich.

The cause of the fire is not yet known however, reports suggest the building was full of flammable waste fuelling the inferno.

The significant heat from the fire caused a partial collapse of the roof and a wall.

Residents in the Margate were asked to keep doors and windows closed overnight, due to the large smoke plume in the area.

Now, fire chiefs have warned of road closures as a result of the blaze for the next couple of days.

A statement released around 9.30pm this evening, said: "The following road closures are planned to be in place from for the next two days: Star Lane closed at the junction of Star Lane Link road this is likely to remain in place for at least two days.

"Nash Road closed at the roundabout junction of Star Lane, will have access only for residents of Wherry close from the roundabout, all other residents will access from the other end of Nash Lane (junction with Empire Terrace) this will remain in place for at least two days."

Earlier, a fire service spokesman said: "Crews are continuing to make good progress protecting a neighbouring unit, using ground monitors and positive pressure ventilation fans."

Since the emergency call, crews have worked to prevent the inferno spreading to neighbouring units using ground monitors and a height vehicle to rain water onto the fire.

This evening a spokesman for KFRS said they would try to keep noise and inconvenience to a minimum.

They added: "There will continue to be smoke in the area and residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed and to avoid the area if they can."
