A rundown council car park has been likened to something out of a “post-apocalyptic zombie town” by disgusted motorists.

The back entrance of the Mill Lane multi-storey in Margate is heavily graffitied, strewn with broken glass and reportedly smells of urine and vomit.

There have even been claims those using the facility have discovered suspected human faeces.

Adeel Abdullah, who lives and works in the town, says he and his colleagues have resorted to walking up and down the car ramps to avoid the stench in the pedestrian stairwells.

“The entrance towards the rear of the building is littered with fast food wrappers, broken alcohol bottles and empty beer cans,” said the 42-year-old accountant.

“There have even been instances of solid human/animal excrement being left with nobody attending to it.

"It appears the council has taken an interest in promoting the tourism in the area by hanging banners around the town, but maybe it would be more fruitful and welcoming for visitors to see a cleaner town.

"The parking is the first point of contact for any out-of-town visitor and Mill Lane does not give an impression of a proud town which is ready to welcome tourists and guests."

An annual pass for the parking complex, which is used by hundreds of people each day, costs £388.

Despite this, Mr Abdullah claims the site has been neglected since the pandemic struck.

"The last noticeable cleaning was carried out during early Covid restriction months and since then it has been left to rot," he alleged.

"It may be convenient for the council to put the blame on antisocial behaviour, lack of civic sense or financial constraints being faced by local authority, but kindly be noted that it is a paid service."

"Me and other users pay hundreds of pounds for use of this service, and the very access to this facility gives the impression of a post-apocalyptic zombie town with drawings on the walls, lift out of service, urine and spilled drink marks on stairs, and empty drink cans.

“If the council can afford to hang banners in the area, pay civil enforcement officers and countless parking attendants, maybe it can afford to give a chargeable service area, once a year, a jet wash and a scrub.

“After heavy rainfall the entrance area always floods and the rubbish and excrement is spread all over.

“Keeping it clean is the least they can do.”

Thanet District Council has been asked for a response.
