The emergency landing by a Virgin Atlantic jet at Gatwick yesterday has proved the need to reinstate Manston as an operating airport, according to Thanet North MP Sir Roger Gale.
The Virgin Atlantic passenger plane made an emergency landing yesterday after a technical fault forced it to turn back and circle Kent.
A Boeing 747 London to Las Vegas flight repeatedly flew over Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge after experiencing issues with one of its landing gears.
The plane was spotted with landing gear deployed and witnesses claimed it was flying low and at a slight angle.
Dozens of flights were delayed or cancelled as crews dealt with the stricken jet, causing disruption to thousands of travellers.
Sir Roger believes that Manston is important not only in the interests of the local economy but as a national asset and a major field for aircraft diversions.
He said: “In the case of the Virgin Boeing 747 the pilot averted a potential disaster but the need for a significant diversion facility in the South East, away from major hub airports, is crystal clear and we need to get on with this before it is too late.
“RiverOak, the company that wishes to buy and operate Manston via a TDC compulsory purchase order, submitted all of its confidential papers to Government, as agreed, prior to Christmas.”
“I hope and expect that Thanet Council will have done likewise.
“It is imperative that the Department of Transport, which is leading on the issue, now swiftly evaluates the case in order that any shortcomings can be addressed and so that Thanet can instigate the necessary CPO process.”
