More than 1,400 people have applied to work at a new Margate supermarket - with just 75 vacancies!

Morrisons has taken over the town's Somerfield store in Hawley Street and plans to re-brand the shop later this year.

Bosses at the UK's fourth largest supermarket chain say they have seen a general increase in the number of applicants looking for work, with around 19 people going for each job at the new store in Margate.

David Kelso, Morrisons' South East regional personnel and training manager, said: "We certainly have had large numbers in all our stores recently, with well over a thousand in certain places as well."

"There is a possibility the economic climate may have had some effect, but we are obviously very glad we can bring these jobs to the community at difficult times."

The move is creating 75 vacancies, ranging from butchers to fresh food assistants and department managers to supervisors. Successful applicants will team up with former Somerfield staff that will join Morrisons when the store is handed over.
