Stunning pieces of pottery which could have come from a Roman shipwreck have been discovered in a “significant find”.

A kayaker stumbled across the “rare” remains while paddling in shallow water off the coast of Ramsgate.

Historic England’s marine listing adviser Mark Dunkley has now carried out some initial investigations in the hope of finding out the location of the potential ruins site and what exactly it might be.

However, during Mark’s visit a thorough investigation could not be undertaken due to adverse tides.

But the kayaker’s finds have been inspected and these will be studied further in order to date them.

According to Mark, the pieces of pottery and glass could have come from a Roman shipwreck off the coast, or from a land site which has been submerged under the water.

He said: “It is the rarity of the material and the quality of the material that is really significant.

“In my experience, this stuff just does not exist in an underwater context anywhere around Britain.

“It is a really significant find.”
