A man had to be rescued from his flat after it became heavily smoke-logged.

Firefighters were called to the flat in King Street, Ramsgate at about 7.20pm and led the man to safety.

Two fire engines were called to the address and crews used breathing apparatus to enter the property.

Once inside they discovered there was no fire but lots of smoke and the man was let out suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance crews.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Fortunately there was no fire, but the flat was heavily smoke logged due to cooking that had been left on."

Following this near miss, firefighters are urging people to keep looking while they’re cooking, and not to get distracted to ensure a fire safe meal time.

Leanne McMahon, for community safety at the organisation added: “Over half of all the fires we attend start in the kitchen and the majority are caused by unattended cooking, a build-up of grease and fat on the cooker, or by kitchen mishaps, where items such as tea towels, chopping boards or washing baskets have been left on the hob."
