A man has been stabbed in broad daylight in the street just yards away from where a Christmas family fun day was being held.
Police were called to Crescent Road in Birchington shortly after 2pm.
Witnesses said the area was "swarming with police" which included armed officers and a dog unit.
Part of the area around the junction with Station Road and Eastfield Road has been cordoned off.
Police confirmed there had been a disturbance and a man was stabbed.
Another man has been taken into custody but it has not been said what exactly he has been arrested for.
A helicopter - believed to be the air ambulance - was heard circling the area and the man was airlifted to hospital.
A witness told KentOnline they heard "shouting and swearing" from what appeared to have been a fight on the street.
A heavy police presence remains in the village but it is not believed the incident has affected the plans for the festivities.
Police spokesman Jo Pattison said: "Officers attended where a man had suffered an injury consistent with a stab wound. He was taken to a London hospital by air ambulance.
"Police remain at the scene carrying out enquiries to determine the circumstances of the incident. One man has been taken into custody."
The stabbing is understood to be an isolated incident and not connected to the village's Christmas celebrations.
The fun day has been taking place in the village since 11am featuring a Christmas market with local artisan stalls, crafts and food and drink stalls.
Live music, children's entertainment and a Santa's grotto have all be in place along with carol singing.
The Christmas lights switch on culminated the day's proceedings.
Anyone with information should call Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting reference 08-0797.
