An airline that has flown presidents, royal families and the Manchester United football team has made Kent International Airport its new home.

Gainjet Aviation, which operates private charter planes across the globe, says it chose to base its UK operations at Manston because of the airport's size.

Sales duo Deborah Knips (pictured, left) and Natalie Aylett also live locally and persuaded management at the company's Athens headquarters to locate in Kent instead of Heathrow or Gatwick - both of which were shortlisted for the role.

Ms Knips said: "The move to Manston has gone really well and we now feel much closer to our customers and colleagues by being part of day-to-day operations at the airport."

Captain Ramsey Shaban, chief executive of Gainjet, said the Thanet facility was "just what we were looking for".

He also hinted at plans to expand the airline, adding: "Looking ahead, it's likely that we'll need to grow the team in the near future."

One of Gainjet's most prestigious customers is Manchester United and the firm recently chartered a Being 757 executive airliner for the Premier League champions' pre-season tour of Asia.

Three of its fleet of planes will be based at Kent International, including a Gulfstream 200 with 10 passengers seats, a Gulfstream 550 capable of transatlantic flight and a McDonnell Douglas MD83 VIP, which features 40 seats and an on-board bedroom.

Matt Clarke, chief executive of the airport, said: "We have seen a significant rise in the level of interest by private charter and business jet operators and we are delighted that Gainjet has moved in."
