A music venue has responded after reports of people falling ill and others walking out of a gig after just a few songs.

Some people who saw Ocean Colour Scene at Dreamland in Margate last night have taken to social media to share their complaints.

Ocean Colour Scene appeared at Dreamland, Margate on Friday

They say the venue got too hot and stewards initially refused to open the doors.

One concert-goer says he thought the gig, which was held in The Hall by the Sea, was over capacity – but Dreamland has denied this.

A woman who has put in a complaint with Dreamland following the gig, posted online: “Complained to the stewards three times and got ignored. Took matters in to our own hands in the end and opened a fire escape. Complaint heading Dreamland’s way. Absolutely awful and no consideration for people’s safety.”

Another said: “A man came running over at one point and pushed the security out the way and opened the doors. They soon got closed again. About 45 minutes before the end, security got given the go ahead to finally open the doors, by which time people were passing out and becoming ill. Totally unacceptable.”

One man who walked out of the gig said he is considering complaining to the Health and Safety Executive, adding: “The amount of people who were in need of medical attention was not good. Dreamland you should have acted quicker.”

Cathryn Donnelly posted on Twitter: “We left too, was dangerously unsafe. I couldn’t risk it. People were passing out in front of us.”

Another guest, who left after three songs, said it was “unbelievably hot and total chaos” with people fainting. He added: “Hopefully people will complain to stop it happening again.

“I opened the fire door to allow in some air but it was promptly closed. I made my issues clear to staff and management then promptly left before any more trouble as people were getting angry. Let’s hope no one died or was seriously hurt.”

Dreamland has said medics treated three people “all of whom were fine”.

The gig was inside at Dreamland Margate

A Dreamland spokesman said: “The Ocean Colour Scene concert held in The Hall By The Sea was well attended however, capacity was within those specified in our independent safety guidelines.

“Inside the venue was not overcrowded, with event goers able to dance and navigate around unhindered.

“An indoor venue at this time of year, with good attendance will become hot and potentially humid. Internal temperatures and crowd safety was monitored and assessed continuously from our operations control and dedicated CCTV operative, as well as those within the venue itself.

“After meeting with departmental supervisors, the venue manager took the decision to open doors to successfully increase the airflow generated by the internal fans, whilst monitoring sound impact externally.

“The medical team treated three individuals in attendance all of whom were fine, with no one advised to seek further medical attention.”

Jenny Parker went to the gig with her husband and two sons. She said: “We are seasoned concert goers and have never experienced anything like that before.

“There seemed to be too many people in the venue, perhaps due the the ‘extra’ tickets that were released for this sold out event.

“Before the support act came on stage, people were already struggling with the heat and humidity. It was stifling.

She added: “It really is a treat to have something so unique so close and convenient. I will not however be buying tickets to any shows for The Hall by the Sea again.”

Jenny has written to Dreamland and Thanet Council to complain and called for the venue to install mor
